Air Pollution: Although there is pollution everywhere on the earth in today’s time, but if you live in an area with high air pollution for three consecutive years, then the risk of lung cancer increases manifold. Pollution damages the healthy tissue of the lungs, causes genetic changes in them and increases the risk of cancer. This has been revealed after a study done on 33 thousand people.
Non-smokers are more at risk
This research took place at the Francis Crick Institute in England. Actually, the people involved in the study were battling lung cancer. On examination, very fine polluting particles were found in the lungs of these people. This greatly increases the risk of epidermal growth factor receptor (EFGR) based cancer. The risk of this cancer is very high for non-smokers and those who do not smoke cigarettes.
Researcher Charles Swanton says that along with aging, cancer-causing cells also increase in the body. However, they are usually not active. But excessive air pollution activates these cancer cells. Due to which the risk of tumor and cancer increases.
Charles says that air pollution is the main cause of lung cancer. Every year, 8 million people die due to this worldwide. The highest risk is from 2.5. These go deep into the lungs and cause fatal diseases ranging from heart diseases to lung cancer.
how cancer is born inside you
To know the effect of air pollution, Charles and his team did research on rats and kept them in air pollution in the lab. In which it was found that there was a change in the cells of the lungs of the rats. Due to PM 2.5 pollutant, lung cells were being transformed into cancer cells.
Charles’s team of international scientists obtained disease and environmental data from 32,957 people in England, Taiwan and South Korea. In which they found that due to PM 2.5, lung cancer is increasing due to EGFR mutants. At the same time, the risk of EGFR-based lung cancer was found to increase from 40 to 73 percent in such people, who do not smoke.
Healthy people are also at risk
After this, Charles’s team examined the lungs of 295 healthy people. In this, when healthy tissue was placed in the same amount of pollution as before, it was found that living in an area with high PM 2.5 particles for three years increases the risk of cancer manifold. This study has recently been published in the journal Nature.
